Makeup Bag Must Haves

I hope everyone is having a wonderful start to their week! I cannot believe we are already half way through March. I am excited that the weather is starting to get a little warmer, and staying that way. What is the weather like where you live?

Today I am going to give you a glimpse into my makeup bag and tell you all about my five beauty essentials. These are the items that I cannot go without and you will always find them in my makeup bag.

Makeup Bag Must Haves

Eyebrow Pencil

It is probably fairly recent that I started doing my eyebrows everyday. I use to think it was an unnecessary step in my beauty routine and they looked fine the way they were. Now I don`t understand how I went so long without filling them in. Instead of being thin, sparse, and none existent they look more put together. I am just getting better at doing my eyebrows, it is a hard skill to master, and finally am happy with the way they look. My favorite brow product to use is NYX`s Micro Brow Pencil in the shade “Ash Brown.” I love this product because it is so slim, easy to store and bring anywhere with you, the size of the pencil makes it easy to fill in my brows and I love the spoolie on the end to comb out my brows. Not to mention it is a super affordable product.

Mascara is the one product that if I am not wearing anything else, I will sometimes throw mascara on to make my eyes pop a little. Mascara is essential and such a great product to start using if you are just getting into makeup. It is so simple, but does so much. I love using Maybelline`s Lash Sensational, L`Oreal`s Voluminous Original Mascara and Lash Paradise Mascara.

I have recently gotten into wearing lashes on a regular basis because it really amps up your look. I have considered getting lash extensions for such a long time, but it is an investment and requires some upkeep. If you have lash extensions, what are your thoughts?

I am one pale person. The lightest shade in every foundation type of pale, so I love to add color and warmth to my face. If I had to choose between bronzer or blush, bronzer would win. My favorite bronzer is Physician Formula`s Butter Bronzer in the shade “Bronzer.” I tried out the shade, “Light Bronzer” when I first purchased but didn`t think it showed up well on my skin, so keep that in mind, even if you are fair skinned.

I am currently loving applying this bronzer with Morphe`s 437 for more definition on my cheeks or Morphe`s R2 for all over.

Are we even surprised? Foundation is a must and creates the base of any makeup look. If I am not wearing foundation, I am probably not wearing makeup. You can check out my review of Maybelline`s Better Skin Foundation and Clinique`s Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer. Two of my absolute favorite foundations that work and look so good.

Beauty Sponge

We need something to apply our foundation. I definitely favor sponges over brushes when it comes to applying my foundation. I think it just creates such a flawless finish, without leaving streaks. I am obsessed with Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. I recently tried out a Sonia Kashuk beauty sponge, but unfortunately think it was discontinued during the re branding. Since I really liked it I will definitely be trying out more of her sponges.

I hope you enjoyed reading all about my beauty essentials. I would love to hear what products you can`t live without!

Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer Review

Foundation is my favorite beauty item and an absolute must have for me. I am always looking for new foundations to test out. I love seeing my skin transform and my makeup come together.

I recently went to Ulta with the intent of getting the It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream because I have heard so many good things about it. After testing it in the store, I just wasn`t all that impressed. I also tested out the new Tarte Shape Tape Hydrating Foundation and wasn`t impressed by the color selection. Even the lightest shade Ulta had in stock was too dark. I would love to hear your thoughts if you have tried either the It Cosmetics or Tarte Foundations!

Finally I decided on Clinique`s Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer and I am really happy that I did.

Clinique Foundation

From Clinique`s Website

Benefits: Moisturizing

Skin Types: All

“A foundation-and-concealer in one for a natural, beyond perfected look that lasts 24 hours. Lightweight, moisturizing makeup covers thoroughly without clogging pores. Skin breathes comfortably, color stays true, even through sweat and humidity.”

Formulated for dry or oily skin?

I have been using this foundation for about a month now and absolutely love it and the way it makes my skin look. I have pretty dry skin and I do not have problems with this looking patchy. It is key to apply moisturizer before applying your foundation and to let it sink into your skin. I have been loving Clinique`s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ for very dry to dry skin. I highly recommend. Even if you are on the more oily side, I think you will still really like this foundation. Dry or oily, you will definitely want to apply powder with this foundation to prevent it from transferring. I have noticed even when I apply powder it will still transfers slightly.

Clinique claims, “due to the rich pigment level that enhances this flawless coverage makeup, shades may appear deeper when first applied.” I am in the lightest shade, 0.5 Breeze. In the bottle and even on the applicator the color looks pretty good. I do notice it does look slightly deeper in shade once applied but it truly does match pretty well once completely applied.  Clinique offers 27 different shades with this foundation.

I went back and forth about whether I liked the applicator of this foundation. At first I didn`t like it because I was like, “OMG I have to dip this applicator in here like 5 times to get the amount of product I need!” WRONG! According to Clinique`s website, “a little goes a long way” with this foundation and I definitely agree. I pretty much go to the extreme with just about everything and have not learned less is more. I finally tried using only one applicator worth of foundation and was extremely impressed with how well and how much of my face it covered. I have problem skin so I went in with a little more foundation on certain areas I needed to cover up better. If you are someone who doesn`t have much to cover up, one applicator worth should work perfect. I also love that the applicator allows you to go back in and target spots that need more coverage.

Clinique Applicator

I love that this foundation doesn`t break up or feel cakey on my skin. I honestly forget I am wearing it sometimes.

With great coverage, a great formula, and only $29 on Clinique`s website, this foundation is worth checking out!

What foundation should I try out next?

Ulta Haul

It has been a couple weeks since I have posted anything and I have missed it! I am coming back at ya with a little Ulta Haul!

Ulta Makeup

I went for one reason, to get the items I was out of, concealer, setting powder, and bronzer. But of course I came back with a little more. Oops.

Clinique Foundation

I don`t want to talk to much about this foundation because I want to dedicate a post to a full review. All I will say is I tried it yesterday and I am pretty impressed.

I`m actually kind of embarrassed to admit this is my first time trying Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. I don`t even think I  need to say anything about it because I am pretty sure everyone in the world knows how amazing it is. If you haven`t heard, it is amazing. I am in the shade, “fair beige.”

Makeup Revolution Powder

I`ve only tried this once so I don`t have a good opinion of it yet. It did set my under eyes pretty well. I am interested to see if it will cause any flash back. The one thing I don`t like is how small the lid is. I like to dump the powder into the lid and then pick it up with my beauty sponge, but since the lid is so small it is hard to pick up the powder, so I was basically getting it everywhere.

This is a repurchase. My all time favorite affordable bronzer, plus it smells amazing like you are on a beach vacation. When I first purchased this, I got the “Light Bronzer” because I am pretty pale, it was too light for me. So now I get the shade “Bronzer” and it is perfect.

I was so impressed by these shadows when I swatched them in Ulta. I am excited to see how they look on the eyes and how they will last. They also had these little quads called the “Full Throttle Shadow Palette” that swatched beautifully too that I want to try out.

NYX Worth the Hype

I didn`t buy this at Ulta, but at Target the next day. This is NXY`s newest lengthening and voluminous mascara, and I love it! It definitely looked more natural, but still added plenty of volume and length to your lashes.  Plus it doesn`t transfer below or above your eyes.

I hope you enjoyed my little haul! I would love to hear if you have tried any of these products and your thoughts!

Can`t Get Enough ~ January Favorites

I cannot believe January is over. Seriously, where did it go?

But honestly, I am really looking forward to 2018 and all the exciting posts I have in mind for the coming months. I want to start doing a monthly post all about the things I am obsessing over that month. I want to focus on beauty and fashion, but I want to throw in some lifestyle favorites as well. I love hearing about the TV shows, books, songs, etc. that people are loving.

Unfortunately this particular post isn`t going to be full of makeup and beauty favorites. A lot of the new beauty products I tried this month were fails (boo). These are a few of the things I have really been loving. Hope you enjoy!

Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette

My best friend got this palette for me for Christmas and I was so excited to try it. Not only does it smell AMAZING, it has some really beautiful colors. Not only can you create some really pretty neutral looks with this palette, but some really fun looks with the purples and greens. I really love the shade “luscious” for all over the lid and the shade “puree” for a really nice transition shade.

Sweet Peach.jpg

L`Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara

This was one of my most used and most loved mascaras in January. It really gave my lashes that sought after volume and pretty good length. I just got a new tube of it a week ago and accidentally got the waterproof version and I DO NOT like it. It seems like a completely different mascara to me.  Plus when I get it on my skin it is impossible to get off without taking off the rest of the makeup underneath.

Simple Water Boost Hydrating Cleansing Wipes

Since starting Accutane, my skincare routine has had to change drastically. I have gone from really intense acne products to really natural, simple products. I started using Yes to Cucumber`s Soothing Hypoallergenic Facial Wipes, thinking they would work with my now super sensitive skin, and they only stung my face when I used them. The Simple cleansing wipes do not sting, they get all your makeup off with one wipe, and don`t leave your face feeling sticky.

Simple Wipes

Jane the Virgin

I am obsessed with this show. I just recently started it and am finishing up the first season, but I can`t get enough. It is about a twenty-something girl, who is saving herself for marriage, but then is accidentally artificially inseminated by her bosses sister. There is a love story, drama, and makes you laugh. All of my favorite things in one TV show.

Living Colors Velvet Plush Blanket

My parents got this blanket for me for Christmas and it is seriously one of the softest blankets I have ever owned. Not only is it really cute, but it is huge, the size of a king sized bed.

I have been listening to G-Eazy songs none stop the whole month of January. After hearing his song Him & I with Halsey I got way more into his music. I love his songs Sober, The Beautiful & Damned, Let`s Get Lost, and Marilyn. I want to see him in concert so badly, but general admission tickets are like $150 (come on G!).

What were you loving this January?

Thanks for reading!

I Can`t Like This

The Vitalist Healthy Elixir Foundation is definitely one that you have to try for yourself. I have heard of this foundation working for oily skinned girls and dry skin girls, so I wanted to see if it would work for me.

Healthy Elixir

From Covergirl`s Website:

“Finally a hydrating, vitamin-infused formula for beautiful, buildable coverage that glides on smoothly for a flawless look. Vitalist Healthy Elixir Foundation is infused with Vitamins E, B3, B5 plus SPF 20. A special antioxidant and vitamin complex plus SPF 20 work together to make your skin look healthy all day. Give your skin a luminous glow. Available in multiple shades from light to deep.”

These are some of the reasons that I just can`t like this foundation, and believe me,  I really tried.

This foundation oxidizes

I have bought three different shades of this foundation. I am pretty pale so I`m not surewhy I didn`t start by buying the lightest shade in the first place. I started by purchasing the creamy natural shade, too dark. So I went a shade down and got the classic ivory shade, still too dark. Finally I purchased the lightest shade, ivory.

Once I got the lightest shade I quickly realized this foundation oxidizes, it wasn`t just because the foundation was too dark for me. It makes my skin look pretty orange. That is one of my biggest turn offs with a foundation. If it oxidizes I am probably not going to like it.

It makes me look oily

I feel like that is a lot coming from someone who is very dry. I used to be more on the oily side, but since starting Accutane, an acne medication, my skin has gotten extremely dry. I don`t think the winter weather is helping either. It looks so beautiful when I first apply it, it really gives you that healthy glow, but it starts looking shiny and feels almost sticky.

Breaks up and looks patchy

The foundation breaks up around my mouth and nose pretty quickly. It slides off the top of my nose and around the sides of my nose and a ring comes off around my lips. It could possibly be coming off around my mouth do to the excessive amount of chap stick I apply every 20 minutes, but it still looks pretty bad. It also clings to, and extenuates my dry patches even though the foundation is supposed to be hydrating.

Whenever I wear this foundation I am not happy with how my makeup looks. This formula does not work with my skin, so I won`t be purchasing it again. If you are at all interested in trying this foundation do it! Just because it doesn`t work for me or ten other people, it could be your new favorite foundation.

The packaging of this foundation is really nice. The foundation is in a glass bottle with a pump. The pump distributes the perfect amount of product. The gold rim and bold, different types of font are very eye catching.

Thanks for reading and let me know if you have tried this foundation. I would love to hear your thoughts and how it worked for you!

What To Watch: Netflix & Hulu

January is probably the most blah month of the year. It`s cold and dreary and you are still broke from Christmas. This is probably when my streaming accounts get the most use.

Unfortunately these shows are no longer on Netflix or Hulu. Which I am really sad/mad about because they are such great shows. I still wanted to mention them because they are so amazing and if you can find them anywhere else you definitely need to check them out.

One Tree Hill • Friday Night Lights • Greek

I hope you are able to find a new series to start from this and I would love to hear some of your favorite TV Series or movies!

Target had a sale, haul + mini review

Target Haul

Every time I go to Target I go in with the intention of getting a couple things. These couple items I need leads to an hour to an hour and a half of looking at every single section. Even if I was there a couple days ago, I still have to look at every single section.

I went to Target yesterday and had to make a stop by the makeup section, of course. I noticed a couple clearance stickers on a few items and an employee told me that over 300 items were marked down due to packaging changes with products. So of course I had to go down every section and look up and down every shelf. At that moment my boyfriend wished he would have stayed home. Sorry AJ.

I contained myself and only got 7 items, unfortunately all the foundations on sale were already sold out of my shade. I also included a mini review/first impression of each item.

L`Oreal Voluminous Feline Noir in Blackest

Voluminous Feline

Was: $7.99 Now: $5.58

L`Oreal kills the game when it comes to mascara. L`Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara and the Voluminous Original Mascara are two of my favorite that I use on a daily basis.

From the packaging….

Now with more intense black pigments for our most ferocious black. Our first mascara for instant volume with ferocious full lash density. Lashes are so powerful, so captivating, so feline. The quick-charge brush captures each lash to deliver fullness and immediate volume. The quick-charge ultra glossy black formula provides a feline-volume in one coat and shiny smooth lashes. Does not smudge and is easily removed.

My thoughts….

It took me several coats to get my eyelash to look the way I wanted to but once I got it there it looks pretty good on both my upper and lower lashes. It just seems like there isn`t much product in the tube so the wand feels very dry when applying. This mascara created more volume than length. I will definitely finish this tube but will stick with my other L`Oreal favorites.

Rimmel London Shake It Fresh in Very Black

Shake It Fresh

Was: $5.99 Now: $4.18

From the Packaging….

First-to-market Shaker system inside the mascara, refreshes the formula when needed to help prevent it from drying out. Ultra-smooth, clump-free, volume from first to last use. The Volume Defining brush gives you a beautiful fan of lashes with maximum separation from corner to corner.

My thoughts….

This tube is heavy! But the shaking technology is pretty fun, even though they recommend only shaking when needed. It was very wet, so I immediately got a giant glob of mascara on my cheek. When you are in a hurry and already have your foundation done, this will ruin your day. I feel like it made my eyelashes look like spider legs, not very voluminous but pretty lengthening. I can see myself mixing it with another mascara for the length, but I did not like how it looked on my lower lashes.

Maybelline Color Jolt Intense Lip Paint in Stripped Down

Was: $7.99 Now: $3.98

From the website….

Amp up the intensity with 8x more pigment in every drop. Maybelline`s vibrant lip paint glides on to deliver a jolt of intense color.

My thoughts….

I am pretty sure they changed the formula or colors of this product because when I went on Maybelline`s website, Stripped Down looked way more purple and mine looks like a pinky nude. The color is intense but it fades pretty fast. Plus the tube is super small so I feel like I will run out of this quickly. Not mad with the sale price, but I do not think I would buy this at full price.

Sonia Kashuk Tools No. 32 Synthetic Concealer Brush

Was: $10.99 Now: $5.48

From the packaging….

Pointed tip and added width make this synthetic brush perfect for under-eye concealing and covering blemishes.

My thoughts….

The packaging for both this brush and the Angled Crease Brush is so nice. They both came in a hard case, which seemed a little more luxurious. I didn`t like this brush for concealing my whole under eye, it made it very time consuming for me. It was very nice for getting close up in the corner of my eye, fixing foundation around my nose, and for concealing my eye for eye shadow. I recommend having a brush like this in your collection.

Sonia Kashuk Tool No. 26 Angled Crease Brush

Was: $10.99 Now: $5.48

From the packaging….

Fits effortlessly into the crease of the eye; great for creating depth.

My thoughts….

Not a huge fan of this yet. I am not sure I`ve used a brush like this so I want to play with it more. It does pack the color on.

Sonia Kashuk Nº 106 Small Eye Shadow Brush

Was: $4.99 Now: $2.48

From the packaging….

Natural and synthetic hair. The perfect brush for a more controlled eye shadow application.

My thoughts….

I really like this brush for packing color onto the lid. I agree with this being the perfect brush for a controlled eye shadow application.

Sonia Kashuk Tools No. 09 Blending Sponge

SK Beauty Sponge

Was: $7.99 Now: $3.98

From the packaging….

The perfect sponge to access hard to reach areas- apply, blend. Smudge and pat your way to perfection.

My thoughts….

The sponge was the perfect amount of dense and squishy. I tried it both dry and wet. I use my favorite sponge from Real Techniques dry, because it gives you more coverage, so I wanted to see how this sponge is dry. It gave more coverage when wet, but not a crazy difference. When I got the sponge wet, it did not expand like most, maybe this is a sign it won`t hold a lot of product. The side applied with the wet side looked more natural. Super happy with the price, even worth it at full price.

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being I go there 5 times a week, how much do you love target?

The best gift ever for beauty lovers!

Beauty subscription boxes.

Christmas may be over, but birthdays are upon us. If you are reading this you probably love makeup just as much as me, know someone who loves makeup, or just want to learn more about different products, but don`t want to break the bank.

For Christmas, my boyfriend`s parents gifted me 6 months of Birchbox and I am so excited. I have wanted to subscribe to a beauty subscription box and just have never done it for myself.

For only $10 a month you can get 5 beauty samples sent right to your door. Once you sign up you fill out your “beauty profile” where you describe your skin, hair, and personal style. Filling out your “beauty profile” allows Birchbox to send personalized items to fit your specific concerns and needs so you will actually want to use the products!

A Glimpse Into My First Box

Since Birchbox was given to me as a gift, my first box was full of their best-selling products.

Beauty Protector

Beauty Protector Protect and Condition– This conditioner does more than just condition. Pearl powder (and other ingredients) protect hair against damage from heat styling and environmental aggressors.

Beauty Protector Protect and Shampoo- Like the conditioner, is made with pearl powder and protects against heat styling. Bonus: after you suds up, its amazing smell lingers on your locks.

My thoughts….

The first thing I noticed was the smell, there really wasn`t one. I was expecting an amazing scent to hit me the moment I put the shampoo in my hair. I mean they hyped up this amazing smell that was going to linger on my locks, but the shampoo and conditioner really had no scent. I think it is really hard to judge a shampoo and conditioner after one use, I just know I wasn`t wowed. I still have a couple more uses from my samples, so maybe it will grow on me.

Jane Iredale

jane iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain in Forever Pink- Swipe on this multipurpose stain for a pretty pink flush on your lips and cheeks. Bonus: the nourishing olive and avocado oils in the formula help to soften and soothe.

My thoughts….

I love how this product made my lips feel nourished thanks to the olive and avocado oils. I wasn`t a fan of the color, it seemed more like a chap stick because of how light it is. I would love to see what other colors are available!

LAQA & Co. B`Lighter in Peacher`s Daughter- Part highlighter, part blush, this formula catches the light for a lit-from-within glow.

My thoughts….

First impression, fail. I admit, I don`t use cream blushes or highlighters like ever, so I haven`t worked with them much, but I did not like this product. It broke up my foundation where I applied it. Not too many people agreed with me in the reviews of this product on Birchbox, so if you like cream blushes and highlighters it might be worth a try!

Most Excited For

Whish Botanical Primer- Prep your complexion with this primer that balances, moisturizes, and protects thanks to blends of Japanese honeysuckle, organic safflower seed oil, and seabuckthorn extract.

My thoughts….

As soon as I saw this Whish primer, I was excited to try it. I love trying out new primers. This product did not disappoint. Due to the extremely cold weather, seriously it has been in the negatives, my skin has been pretty dry and this primer promises to prevent flaky and caky foundation. I used this with the $20 Drugstore Foundation, which clung to my dry patches, and with this primer underneath made the foundation look really good. I would definitely purchase a full size. For the same price as other high-end primers you receive 2 oz. for $35 as opposed to 1 oz or less. This is a Birchbox Exclusive, so you can only purchase this on their website.

I highly recommend gifting this to someone, even yourself, if you love trying out new beauty products. I cannot wait to see what my other boxes have in store!

Have you ever tried Birchbox?

$20 drugstore foundation!?

You read that right. A $20 foundation from the DRUGSTORE! This cannot be considered affordable.

Before you call me crazy, I did not spend $20 on this foundation. Thanks to my CVS ExtraCare card, I had a 40% off coupon that I applied to the purchase. This foundation went from $18.29 to $10.97. I think I can handle that. This Foundation just stuck out to me while looking for new makeup. Not only is the packaging different than most foundations, short, fat tub with a sponge on top, but it claims an insta-filter right there on the packaging. Yes please!

From Revlon`s Website:

“Our newest flawless-finish foundation with built in blender so you have a perfected makeup look anytime, anywhere.”

Our innovative formula works with your skin type and evens and smooths your skin tone, to leave you with a  fresh faced, natural finish.”

“Full range of high definition shades.”

-“Medium, buildable coverage

-All day wear

-High-Definition Filter technology captures and transforms any light to blur and soften flaws

Who is not sold on the description and features of this foundation!? I think we all love a flawless finish and blurred flaws.

I don`t agree with the “full range of high definition shades.” 12 shades doesn`t qualify a full range. The colors basically go from really fair (me), to kinda fair, to tan, to dark.

First Impression

I was fully prepared to be blown away by this foundation. I wasn’t. For a $20 foundation from the drugstore I wanna be wowed. This foundation fell flat. It doesn’t even have a whole fluid oz of product, only 0.91.

To use you are supposed to shake the bottle and twist the bottom to get the foundation out. It took awhile to get any product out. I am also not a huge fan of the sponge, I think it was a good concept but I prefer a pump or even the little spatula the Wet n Wild Photo Focus Foundation has. Plus, once you use it you are going to have this dirty foundation filled sponge just sitting there.

I tried applying it with both a brush, I used the Morphe M439, and the Real Techniques sponge. I surprisingly liked it better with a brush, I usually prefer a sponge. I also felt like I had to use a lot of product just to get a fair amount of coverage from this foundation.

Since I am pretty fair, I got 110 Ivory and it matches my skin pretty well. The foundation hasn`t oxidized and hasn`t broken up. Thankfully! I have pretty oily skin, but since it is winter and the air is drier, I am getting patches of dry skin. I immediately noticed the foundation clung to my dry patches, not a cute look. So if you have pretty dry skin I don`t think you will like this foundation.

My overall first impression of this foundation, is I wouldn`t recommend it. I especially wouldn`t pay full price for it. If you want to give it a try and see what you think, definitely find a coupon for it. I am going to keep trying it and see how it wears throughout the day. I have tried foundations before that I didn`t immediately like and now they are some of my favorites, so there is still hope.

If you are looking for a good, affordable drugstore foundation check out my post about my Current Go-To Affordable Foundation.

I would love to know your thoughts if you have tried this foundation!
